Home is in many different places when Iam with you

Dear you,

I just came back from Indonesia, a place that I call home ( other than my Toronto home), grew up  and spent 18 years living there. This time I have the pleasure of going home to celebrate my little baby brother’s wedding and my mom in law’s 75th birthday. Both are milestone worth of celebrating  with enough foods, and lots of fun. We also managed to have a little getaway with the whole  family to East Java  before returning to Toronto.  Time is never long enough when you are in a new place, but always short enough when you hit the bed at home (if you know what I mean).

Because I am hardly at one place for many days, I have immersed myself in the local street food scene, rather than taking pictures of my own food. Let’s be honest, the time away from home is the time to absorb and learn all of these things thrown at you while you can. At least for me, this trip back home has somehow make me miss travelling even more, and made me realise so much I don’t know about a place I call home .

Things are so much different and so much more dynamic on a daily basis. Except for the traffic jam that I don’t miss, living in Asia opens up much more possibility for  interruptions, distractions, and continuous improvisation because one has got to live, compete, and care for each other.

What I miss the most is you will never out of food options. On the street, in the restaurants, in your cousin’s home, someone is always arranging some kind of get together.

Someone is getting ready to have a lunch party.A humble Warung selling rice, fried fish, fritters, eggs, the usual stuff for lunch.

I confess this could be a bit much if you are not used of having people around you all the time. But there is a beauty in eating together, and sharing meals, and getting your hands deliciously dirty and talking with your mouth half full. Makes my heart so excited and glad to think about it.

So many photos of street food, but today I would like to warm you up with the introduction to Masakan Padang.  The cuisine from West Sumatra is well known for the use of spice ( like hot chillies), and more spices, and more spices. Their foods are so complex in flavour, involving   sweet , salty, a little dash of sour, and mostly umami and you know how i feel about umami right?OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The infamous Rendang,Beef cooked in coconut milk and shredded coconut for days( literallyas a way to preserve meat), its so rich and spicy, no wonder CNN named it one of the best food to try.

How my plate looked like, a balanced diet i should say

Are we really going to fight for the curried beef tendons? Alright, I can tell you why! They are so tender and complex.

The squid with turmeric heavenly sauce, and that fried chicken with little bits of spices ( gallangal and lemon grass are deep fried with the chicken, it creates such a fragrant aroma) how many plates are on the table really?

chicken simmered in coconut water, with herbs . it looks plain, but it taste nothing close to ordinary

Telur Balado –Boiled eggs that was also deep fried and then marinated and cooked in shallot, garlic, chillies , tamarinds, and the list continues…

This is how we eat, with our hands. Might look so improper, but this is the Indonesian way, and something about mixing the foods with the tip of your fingers makes the foods even more delicious

The biggest danger? One plate of rice can’t never seem enough.

Let me  know if you are ready to move on to the next level of food porn. Hungry yet?
